THE WALNUT OFFERS A NIGHT OF “TITANIC” RECOLLECTIONS

The Walnut Street Theatre’s Independence Studio on 3 opens its 2004 season with “Unsinkable Women: Stories and Songs from The Titanic.” Written and performed by Deborah Jean Templin, this emotional tour de force focuses on the personal journeys of various women who were aboard The Titanic. This powerful study of courage and character begins performances on January 6, 2004, and runs through the 25th.

On April 15, 1912, the sinking of the Titanic became an international news story – and a grand symbol of survival. “Unsinkable Women” is based on actual diaries, letters, period songs and interviews. Take a remarkable journey with nine women whose lives were forever altered by their experience including: Madeline Astor, Violet Jessup, Molly Brown and the illustrious Philadelphian, Eleanor Widener.

While appearing in the national tour of “Titanic,” Deborah Jean Templin conceived this performance piece about the women aboard the ill-fated liner. Ms. Templin has appeared at the Walnut Street Theatre as Miss Hannigan in “Annie,” Fraulein Kost in “Cabaret” and Harriet Cornwall in “Isn’t It Romantic.” She performed at the Merriam Theatre in “Titanic.” Other national touring productions include “Mamma Mia!,” “Baby” and “Annie.” Also in Philadelphia, Deborah Jean received wide acclaim for her portrayal of Kaye Goodman in “Nite Club Confidential.”

The artistic team for “Unsinkable Women” includes Director Nancy Robillard, Movement Consultant April Feld, Costume Designer Sara Jablon, Lighting Designer Shelley Hicklin, and Musical Supervisor and Solo Pianist C. Colby Sachs.

In its 2004 season, Walnut’s Independence Studio on 3 includes one world and two Philadelphia premieres. In addition, due to its popularity, this acclaimed series expands its schedule to a three-week engagement for each play.
